Yes, I had her to the dogtor. They did blood work, screening, X-rays, and one other test to the tune of $351 when I told them I had $250. Everything was normal. Sent me home with a bag of solution, a handful of huge needles to give her fluid subcutaneously and two meds. I couldn’t bring myself to use the fluid/ needles. With her being so traumatized and needles hurt, so no. I use a syringe to squirt water in her mouth. When she won’t eat I use puppy milk substitute. And treat her gently, keeping our routine the same, give her lots of love. It brought her around once maybe it’ll work again. I’m getting a consultation with a a respected trainer/communicator. See what happens. I’m trying everything I can to fix her.

Yes Grunt-Grunt will always be next to me. The other day I had it quiet because I was reading my Bible and I heard a snore, then another and another I looked down where she used to lay and saw her laying there sleeping on her pillow. It was just for a second or two and it faded away, but it was enough for me.

The first anniversary of losing my Pug Angel Grunt-Grunt was 12/30/23 and I had a very hard time with it. She quit eating on 12/25/22 and was gone five days later. It was made harder because Lexie Loo, the new dog achieved playing just because for the first time in almost a year. So part of my heart was jumping for joy for one dog and still breaking for another. The picture is of Angel Grunt-Grunt ‘s headstone.

But the experience was made worse by the fact that the service we received was less than comforting. I felt he was not treated with the dignity he deserved. I miss him so much. Friday would have been his 19th birthday. I was so excited to plan his birthday celebration. I was so sad all day.

Lexie Loo Who’s personality is coming out more and more everyday. It is such a joy to watch her grow in confidence. It’s funny, she will bark at us if we talk in bed for more than a minute or so. I’m grateful that she has started to wake us up if she has to go during the night. I finally found a groomer that I really like after trying 3 others. I have noticed that I’m still grieving strongly for Grunt-Grunt, but am finally able to fully accept Lexie Loo Who into my heart.

The name Lexie Loo Who just came to me when we got her. I have a habit of putting the first letter of the name with oo behind it on a lot of dogs. The Who came from the little girl in the Grinch, Cindy Lou Who. She has blossomed so much since we brought her home. When we got her she hadn’t been groomed in months, was filthy, matted stinky and had a horrible ear infection in both ears. She spent the first month sitting on the arm of the couch and shook. She was so traumatized. It just broke my heart. She’s an 8 yr old apricot cockapoo, with little dark patches. Now that she’s been groomed she’s so cute. There were a couple of coincidences that told me that I was doing the right thing by adopting her. First when I got Grunt-Grunt it was 2 wks after I lost Ladiebug. I picked Lexie Loo up 2 wks after I lost Grunt-Grunt. Second they were both 7yrs when I got them, Third both turned 8 in May after getting them. Four we left the house at 1:15 when going to let Grunt-Grunt go, and…

 Dana posted an update

Well it\'s been quite some time since I posted last. Last time I had an adorable Pug Grunt-Grunt, so named for the little grunts she made when she was happy. Well, when I got Grunt-Grunt her left eye was damaged. In March of 2022 her injured eye ruptured and had to be removed. That was $1200 I didn\'t have, but I couldn\'t let her go either. She healed well from the surgery. But for about a year before that she\'d been suffering from Pug myopathy and could wobble at best without assistance. So I found this great charity called High Rollers Club, and they supply dogs with wheelchairs, and you return the chair when you are no longer using it. Well, that dreadful day came for me on 12/30/22 at 4:10pm. Grunt-Grunt had quit eating on Christmas Day, but had shown no signs of being sick until then. When we got to the vet I was told that there was nothing they could do for my baby girl. She had a horrible infection and even if I put her in the ER she wouldn\'t make it. Why?!?!?! She was such a happy little dog who\'s life started out with abuse and neglect. She was my world, got me through so many dark days. I would\'ve done anything to save her, even traded my life for hers, but then I wouldn\'t have been here to care for her. I feel so much guilt over her death, if I just would have known that she was sick, I could have saved her. She deserved to live and love for many more years. She would have turned 12 this May. I miss her so much.

Dana posted an update The 11th of February was 3yrs since I lost my Ladiebug. That was such a hard day, letting her go broke my soul. She had mammary cancer that had spread to her lungs and heart. This made it hard for her to breathe and she\'d become lethargic due to her heart. But even so every morning about 5am she\'d wake us up for her walk if we weren\'t already up. Our walks got shorter and slower at the end, but she still got so excited to go. I knew that the cancer was really starting to affect her, but she stayed this beautiful, happy girl till the end. Her last was spent doing all her favorite things. After her walk I made her a special breakfast of chicken with strawberries, blueberries, cheese and pumpkin. After which she and I shared a bowl of her favorite cereal, Captain Crunch with crunch berries, bite for bite. And of course she finished off the leftover milk. I then took a washcloth and wiped her fur down and gave her a thorough brushing. Then I sat on the floor next to her and gave her a very long, gentle massage from head to tail. Halfway through she leaned over putting her full weight on me with a soft grruufffft escaping as she collapsed into my arms. We layed on her bed and took a nap together for about an hour or so. I wrapped her up in my arms, holding her with my head on her chest I listened to her heartbeating so strong. We spent some time out in the yard where she made her rounds, sniffing everything throughly, as if she knew this was to be her last time doing it. I believe that she knew that it was her last day here with me, in the place she\'d come to love. For lunch she had roast beef, cottage cheese and King\'s Hawaiian dinner rolls. (She loved all bread, but those were her favorite and I always shared them with her bite for bite) and for dessert she got a big bowl of fresh whipped cream. We cuddled on the couch and watched Homeward Bound, her favorite movie and napped until a few friends and their dogs came by to say goodbye. She was lavished with love and treats, and she played with her dog buddies for the last time. Their play was more subdued and gentle than normal. The vet got to the house in the late afternoon, and Ladiebug and I curled up on her bed while some friends stayed to say their final goodbyes and to be there for me. I layed with her in my arms tightly while the vet inserted the IV, I rested my head on her chest, listening to her heartbeat and I softly sang an Irish lullaby to her as she let go of this life, peacefully crossing the Rainbow Bridge where she waits for me to join her. As I listened to her last heartbeat a part of my soul died with her. I held onto her for almost an hour before finally letting the vet take her for cremation. I didn\'t know it then, but she passed on so there would be a place for another dog who just 13days later would desperately need a home to come to. I rescued my current dog from a horrible situation and from being put down because she was \"old\" and injured due to neglect. Ladiebug lost her battle with cancer, so this new dog could keep her life. I miss my Ladiebug so much, but I\'m grateful that I was able to save Grunt-Grunt\'s life, and give her the loving home she deserves. As I write this Grunt-Grunt, so named for the quiet grunts she makes when she\'s happy, lays curled up next to me snoring softly, like only a Pug can do.

Well, it has been a long time since I’ve posted. Life has been hectic to say the least. The last time I posted I had only had my precious Pug Grunt-Grunt for about a year and a half. She was in good health then. In July of 2020 i started to notice that her hind legs started to not working quite right. I took her to the vet, and she acted like it was no big deal. Just watch her and let us know if anything changes. Gee thanks doc! NOT! Well she stayed about the same until November. We had to move during that month and I noticed she was wobbling more, but still motivating good. By Feb of 2021 her wobble was getting more pronounced. I wanted to take her in to the vet, but was unable to due to unexpected bills. This had me spastic with worry that she had degenerative myelopathy. By April of 2021 I had started using a walking sling with her and it helped her a lot. She was able to run around the yard as fast as I could follow her. I started thinking about a wheelchair for her. Then found out that there was no way I could afford to buy her one. I’m on a low fixed income and the prices they want are outrageous. Then by the grace of God I found a charity called High Rollers Club that help dogs get wheelchairs when their hoomans can’t afford one. In July Grunt-Grunt’s chair arrived, and all I had to do was donate what I could afford towards the cost. Mama Cynthia, the lady who runs the charity does everything she can for mainly Pugs, but she doesn’t turn any dog, cat, pig, even a goat away. Grunt-Grunt loved it and took right to it, for regular walks again. Our yard is so small that she didn’t maneuver very easily in it, so we continued to use the sling in the yard. Again my house is too small for her to use her chair inside. When inside we carried her long distance, she weebled and wobbled pretty good if not going too far. In March of 2022 the eye that had been injured before I got her ruptured in the back. The vet had to remove her eye, to the tune of $1,200. Thank…[Read more]

Well last weekend my Grunt-Grunt’s eye started getting goobers in it. I thought it was just an infection, and it wouldn’t be too terribly hard to deal with. By Sun evening the goobers had turned yellow/green and had taken over her entire eye. The one that was injured when I rescued her. The earliest I could get her into the vet was Wednesday morning. The vet informed me that due to the extra pressure in that eye it had actually ruptured in the back of it. The vet said that I had 2 options, put her down or do the surgery to remove her eye. Thank God for my Momma and her credit card. The money I had with me would have only covered putting her down, and the vet only allowed payments if it was paid off in 60 days. The surgery was $1200. No way I could pay that off in 2mo. I was panicking, how could this be happening to us? I went to talk to my mom who was in the waiting room, absolutely bawling because I thought I was going to have to put her down. My mom said she would not let this happen to her granddog and put it on her credit card. I have never been so relieved in all my life. She’s an angel. I brought Grunt-Grunt home Thursday afternoon, and she is healing nicely. I’m telling you that from Saturday through Wednesday morning I didn’t sleep because I was cleaning her eye out every hour, to keep the puss from a hard crust on it. When I think about just how close I came to losing my precious Pug because I didn’t have an extra $1200 laying around I start to shake, and cry uncontrollably. I’m going to apply for the Care Credit card, it’s for medical bills. Wish me luck with getting approved. I won’t use it unless there’s a medical emergency, but this way I won’t ever have to make that decision for that reason again. Losing an animal because of their age or because there’s nothing else the vet can do hurts horribly. But thinking that my Pug was going to die because I’m poor was honestly the absolute worst pain I have ever felt. It was worse than any other animal…[Read more]

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, i believe that her knowing what was happening that day was a gift to me. One that I treasure. Making her last da as special as I could was not only for her, but it was for me. It made what happened easier for me to take. When I lost Bear it was a surprise, I didn’t know that it was coming and couldn’t prepare for it. In fact I still have a problem with the way that day went down. I was working and sent Bear to the vet for the first time without me. My fiance took him. The vet told him that Bear was in excruciating pain and the only option was to put him down. It upset jim so much that he let the vet push him into putting him down right there and then. Before I was notified or was given the chance to say wait at least until I get there. I was told about it after the fact, after he’d been put down. I still harbor ill feelings towards him for this fact. Bear was MY world. The only reason I’m alive today, and I was denied the chance to be there…

The first 3 pictures are of my baby Bear, my soulmutt that I wrote about earlier. He was so handsome. He was Queensland Blue Healer and Flat Coated Retriever, 105lbs of sweetheart. The last 2 pictures are of my Black Lab mix Ladiebug. She is the dogI saw with Bear for 2 weeks after he passed away. When I would be outside in the yard alone, working with my flowers and crying because I missed Bear so much I would hear his bark and as I\’d look up I\’d see him coming down the street next to our house and he had another dog with him that looked almost exactly like him, but was smaller and for some reason I knew it was a female. (who I called Stella) anyway they would turn the corner towards our house and then fade away about the time they got to the driveway gates. This went on everyday for 2 weeks, then stopped and I eventually let the other dog fade to the back of my mind. Then 8 months later on the night before my 50th birthday my fiance and I both dreamed about seeing Bear sitting in front of the local shelter. In the morning we told each other about our dreams and decided that it was Bear telling us it was time to adopt a new dog, and since it was my birthday, the start of a new year, and a new decade it had to be that day. Well we went to the shelter and I told them we were looking for a large, senior dog. We didn\’t care what breed, male or female. Just large and senior because no one wants to give big dogs or senior dogs a chance. We were told that there was only one in the whole shelter a black lab mix, but she was at an adoption event across town. Now this didn\’t click with the dog I\’d seen with Bear at the time, but my fiance quickly said that we\’d take her, sight unseen. Well we drove across town to get her but they\’d already left so back across town we drove. As we sat in the meet and greet area I saw Bear out of the corner of my eye and knew we were doing the right thing. When they brought Ladiebug into the area and I saw her for the first time I hit my knees, tears rolling down my cheeks as I recognized her as the dog I\’d seen with Bear for those 2 weeks. I wrapped my arms around her neck and buried my face in the soft fur of her neck. Then I showed the girls a picture of Bear, and they were amazed at how much they looked alike. She was about 9yrs old, had been a stray, had a little trouble seeing, her teeth were worn down and a couple were broken off. She was very calm, timid, they said afraid except for with us. She\’d been there for almost 3mo and no one had even looked at her, and she was beautiful, very thin, she only weighed 40lbs, had kennel cough, worms and an ear infection. We named her Ladiebug because that\’s what my grandmother called me as a child and we got her on my birthday, starting a new year, a new decade for me and a new life for her. we celebrated her birthday with mine. It was painfully obvious that she\’d been abused by someone pretty bad. You couldn\’t raise your hand or voice without her wincing, she wouldn\’t eat until we were out of the room, but he had to keep one of us within her sight at all times the rest of the time. She didn\’t make any noise for the first week, until on a walk and this weird guy walked too close to me and she moved between us and let out with a growl that had to have come from the tips of her toes. Then she was in the yard and saw him walking too close to her fence and she barked, then looked back at me as if to ask if it was ok, and I told her it was. She was a gentle, sweet soul who you couldn\’t help but love. Every morning when I\’d get myself a big bowl of cereal and sit down she\’ sit iin front of me and we\’d share the bowl, bite for bite. We used to share Kings Hawaiian rolls the same way, And I used to give her what I called slow gentle lovins, where I\’d rub and massage her entire body gently, slowly taking an hour or more and she\’d just fall over against me letting out a quiet \”urf\” as she did, and again here and there through out the session. We did this at least twice a day at first. More often after we found out she had mammary cancer, and it became more advanced. That\’s why we lost her. We found out she had it when we got her, and she was with us 2mo and 9 days shy of 2yrs. Not nearly long enough, but at least we knew that she knew she was loved during her last days. She was happy during her time with us. She used to lay on her side and rub her head ack and forth on it\’s side letting out an \”eeerrrruurrr\” for sometimes up to 5 mins at a time, her tail just wagging. It was 13 days after we lost her on 2-11-19 that I rescued Grunt-Grunt. My mom said that Ladiebug crossed over because she knew Grunt-Grunt was going to need a home. Somehow I believe that. God how I miss her!!! It took me 6mo to eat cereal again. I love you little girl!

Wow, was surprised to hear from you so soon, but very pleased. I agree animals are amazing in what they can deal with, and how well they deal with things that would break most humans. Each one of my fur-babies has been an absolute inspiration to me in so many ways. Bear is the only dog that I have been able to have in my life from beginning to end. His mother was my roommates dog so I was there through the entire pregnancy. In fact he and his siblings were actually born in my lap. Momma was fine with the whelping box until the contractions really started, then she ended up in my lap. It was a good thing I was there as Bear was nearly twice the size of the other puppies and Sheila was having a great deal of trouble birthing him. I ended up helping her by pulling him out. When the pups were only 10 days old Sheila for some strange reason brought him out to me, placing him in my lap for a couple of minutes. She did this every so often until he was old enough to run around and find me himself. I never quite understood it until Bear was about 4mo old and I had my first seizure, and I had vomited and aspirated. He went through the screen door over to the neighbors getting his head stuck in the cat door attracting her attention. She knew something was wrong because you never saw one of us without the other. By the time she got to me I was already turning blue. Thank god she was a nurse and knew what to do. So I am still alive today because of him. I truly believe that his mom knew that there was going to be something special between us and tha\’ts why she brought him out to me. He saved my life more than once, protecting me for the 5 yrs that we lived on the streets together. In fact there came one of the darkest days of my life, I considered suicide, but couldn\’t do it because I couldn\’t leave him alone in the world to fend for himself. I just couldn\’t do that to him. He was the most incredible soul that has ever touched my life. He made me a better person. He is my soul-mutt. Of all the dogs I\’ve ever loved I loved him the best. Not more, just so differently. He was Queensland Bleu Healer (mom) and Flat coated Retriever (dad) 105lbs of the longest blackest, softest fur. And he really did resemble a bear when you looked at him walking from the back. He had the sweetest personality, loved almost everyone. But there were those few that he would place himself between them and me and let out a little \”burf\” just so I could hear it. I learned quickly, especially on the streets, to trust his judgement. Itkept me safe moe than once. He had a thing for little dogs. He loved them. The last 3yrs of his life his \”girlfriend\” was a little Chihuahua named Tee-Tee. She lived across the street and they would lay by their fences and actually \”talk\” to each other. She could take his favorite baby from him, or even take treats right out of his mouth. She cried out for him for months after he passed. Ah, I have such amazing memories of him. I do of all my dogs but he was so special. I;m including pics of Grunt-Grunt this time. I just got a new computer and haven\’t been able to transfer my pics of Bear and Ladiebug over yet. When I do I\’ll share them too. I have to share this story, it was so funny. Tonight we had a really bad winter rain storm come through with wind gusts over 55mph. My little Grunt-Grunt was sleeping soundly on her perch, (the arm of the couch that\’s next to the wall) and we had a super wind gust that hit the side of our trailer so hard it sounded like the walls were going to come down. Well this woke he up with such a start that she jumped up off the perch and let out the biggest grow and barking she\’s ever done and i don\’t think her feet touched the couch as she landed in my lap at the opposite end. She buried herself under my arm and was letting the wall have it. Poor baby, that wind gust really got to her. she\’s been attached to me at the hip ever since. Ilove her so much. When I got her she\’d been used as a breeder, physically abused, never even had a toy. Nor was she allowed to go outside to play or go potty. She had a horrible ear infection that had been neglected for months the vet said. It was so bad she\’d scratched a hole in the cornea of her eye and is now blind in that eye. She was lucky not to lose it. She\’s so amazing, it took me about 24 hrs of taking her out every couple hrs to potty and praising her when she did to train her to ask to go out to potty. It didn\’t take long for her t figure out what tous were for, even though she doesn\’t play with them a whole lot, she does play with them. Within the first 3 or 4 hrs of having her she decided I wasn\’t allowed out of her sight. Her owner died and the lady\’s daughter was going to put her down rather than try to find her a home because she was almost 8 and because of her eye. The woman figured no one would want her. I couldn\’t believe it. I got her the day before they were going to put her down. At first I was only going to foster her because we\’d just lost Ladiebug 13 days before. It took less than 24hs for me to decide that I couldn\’t give her up. She was just so precious, so willing to love after coming from such tragic circumstances. She gives me strength. If she can go through what she did and still have such a loving personality, learn so fast, I can face anything I have to as well. Well I\’ve run on long enough for now, next time stories of Ladiebug. Enjoy the pics. Take care, stay safe and give your babies schritches from our house.

Well it’s been awhile since I.ve written. Been busy. Grunt-Grunt’s hind legs are getting worse, but she still does her best to maneuver around. I didn’t have to build her wheelchair after all. I found a charity online called High Rollers Club that caters to Pugs who need wheelchairs and can’t afford them. I just have to promise to return the chair when Grunt-Grunt can no longer use it. It recently arrived and we’re getting her used to it now. I’ve spoken to the vet and she said that as long as she stays a happy dog, eating and drinking there’s no reason she can’t live to a ripe old age even being paralyzed. This was a comfort to me, as she is my sanity, my best friend. without her i’d be so vey lonely. My fiancé is battling lung cancer and has a spinal disease that leaves him bedbound much of the time, leaving me alone much of the time, except for my Grunt-Grunt. Aug 26th was the 5yr anniversary of my Bears passing and itnwas awesome, for 3 nights before I would be having a nightmare and suddenly I would turn around to see that great big black ball of fur standing there barking and wagging his tail at me. The sight of him changed my nightmare into a much more pleasant dream. The first night seeing him was so real that I woke up and actually looked for him for a minute, until I woke up completely and realized that it was just him visiting me to say hello and that he loved me still. Then when Jim got his cancer diagnosis he was sleeping on the couch having a nightmare, (you could tell, he was moaning and crying out) I saw our Ladiebug standing next to the couch, her nose almost touching his, and I swear I heard her do her quiet little burff and he seemed to calm down, then she was gone. I truly believe that our pets come back to see us from time to time, especially during times of great duress. Ladiebug and Bear protected us while here, and they continue to do so now. God I miss them.

Yes, if I had the choice of skipping my babies, as well as the pain of loosing them, or to have both my babies and the inevitable grief and pain, I’ll take the joy and the pain. I’ve taken to taking Grunt-Grunt outside at about 500-530am and we stay out for about an hour or so. This is our time now, and in the late evening because we live in the desert and it’s already over 100° during the day. My fiance built her a little bed frame with a shade over it and I made the mattress for it so she has a soft comfortable place to lay when we’re outside. She loves it. Next week we are putting in a 4’x4′ patch of grass for the Grunt-Grunt too. This way when she has to potty when it’s hot out she can use the grass and not burn her little feet. She isn’t fond of her booties. Spent the weekend looking up patterns for doggy wheelchairs. Got a couple of ideas, even found the most expensive part, for free. The wheels I found on an oxygen tote. Excited I found them, but saddened too. Her breathing still isn’t quite right, maybe I’m just worrying too much. Bear was taken from me suddenly. Took him in to check something out, and I got a call from the vet, they had just put down the most incredible soul I’d ever met. And I didn’t get to be there. I was there for his first breath and every breath after that, except his last one. I was working, and didn’t think they would put him down without me there. 5 yrs and I still go to pieces thinking about that. Ladiebug, we had to choose her pass over day. One of the hardest days. I’m trying to prepare for Grunt-Grunt, including saving money up so that when the time comes, hopefully I’ll have the money and that will be one less thing for me to stress over.. thank you for the beautiful words and the support. They are appreciated more than you know. I have only my fiance here, no friends to speak of. This makes venues like this so amazing, and people like you so wonderful.

Dana posted an update I\'m very sad tonight as I look upon the faces of the last two babies I\'ve lost. My Flat coated retriever Bear, (8/26/16) and my blk lab mix Ladiebug (2/11/19). I lost them both to cancer. Bear I had from before he was born and Ladiebug I had 2 mo & 9 days shy of 2 yrs. Each of their passings allowed for me to rescue another dog. With Ladiebug, 13 days after I lost her I learned of a 7 yr old Pug that was going to be put down because she was \"too old, and no one will want a dog with a bad eye.\" She\'d scratched a hole in her corena due to an ear infection neglected for too long. Well now I\'m seeing the Pug, Grunt-Grunt, starting to age very fast, her health declining, her back legs starting to give out. I know that her time is coming much sooner than I can accept right now. So I sit and talk to the pictures of Bear and Ladiebug, asking them to be with her when the time comes so she won\'t be alone at all. Because I\'ll be holding her tightly in my arms here, until she\'s crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge. She\'s such an amazing dog. Always happy, has this cute little \"indoor voice\". So in tune with my emotions. I have been blessed by the fact that all 3 of these babies have been certified service dogs. Bear was seizure and PTSD, Ladiebug was seizure and Grunt-Grunt is PTSD. I will survive, my heart will continue to beat, but I nor my heart will ever be the same. Thank God, as I have become a better person thanks to my dogs. Thanks
