Good morning to all of us who lost a beloved pet. I wanted to tell you about an idea that I had for helping me with grief. I am still grieving about losing my two sweet cats, Tim and Lulu last year. What affected me even harder was the loss of my mother just when the pandemic started and I could not fly over there to be with her. With the help of therapy and good friends I have come to realize that she will always be with me, right there in my heart. But often I feel myself missing the physical part, being able to hug her. One sleepless night I had an idea: I have a little pillow that she gave me and I knew that you can transfer photos on fabric. So I had one of my favorite photos of her put on fabric (I found the service on Etsy, I can post the link if you are interested) and sewed it on the pillow case. Now when I need a little more than memories I hug the pillow and think of her. Definitely nothing like the real thing but it helps a little. We can do the same with the pets we lost and grieve: every little bit helps, I think.

Losing a mother is unlike any loss. Especially if you are close. I lost my mum to ALS 15 years ago. That was tough. I am so sorry you couldn’t be with your mom but it’s ture – your mother is always with you, literally in your DNA. Photographic and artistic images of our beloveds DO help us feel close to them. The urns you make with images are an excellent example. I have a sweatshirt with my BG on it, and a canvas of her beautiful face. Plus, sleeping with a stuffed cat helped me get through the tremendous pain of saying goodbye. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and support, Sigrid. {{HUGS}} Toni

Karen, you’ve been through a lot! I am so glad you find the strength to care for Alfie and Lily Belle, but maybe you all prop each other up. Sometime in the past the quote by Ram Dass “We are here to walk each other home” really landed on me. Best wishes to you! -

Walter looks like a character and I agree: nothing is worse than to see them suffer! Yes, so much love is needed. Both my sweet cats, Tim and Lulu, passed away last year. I miss him sitting in front of the house where he would wait for us. He knew the sound of the car half a block away! And Lulu would drape herself all over my deck, making it very clear that this was her space and nobody else’s. My heart is healing but I decided to wait until the construction on our house is done by the end of the year hopefully. It would be too chaotic for them. So I teamed up with a neighbor to take care of the feral neighborhood cats. They are fiercely feral and I doubt I will be able to make them accept me closer than 4 feet away but it feels good to see them wait for me in the morning and evening and know somebody cares for them. -

Lisa, she’s a bundle of cuteness. I feel for you and I hope you have friends around you to understand your pain. And this community here certainly does. The cold hard facts cannot be changed but each and everyone here has gone through this. And they are good at listening and comforting and making you feel less alone with this. Let us hear about her and let us help you mourn. Sending good wishes! Sigrid -

Such sweet and soulful eyes. It takes time and many tears before you will be able to feel her in your heart and be at peace with that. At least that’s my experience. It’s not like the joy of having them around but it is a comforting feeling too: they are safe and sound, and the worst has already happened. I can still feel their sweet energy and I can talk to them in my mind. They are still part of my life and I am grateful for that. Best wishes to you! Sigrid -

I am sure he did, Maureen! They are generous souls and they want to spread happiness. So glad you and Brony will support each other! Love, Sigrid -

I hope you will try to write to us about Bandit. You may find that it will give you some comfort to be heard by people who know your pain, who have been there. Best wishes to you! Sigrid -

Amber, what a beautiful photo of Sara! You have come to the right place to talk about her, about your long – and too short – life together. All of us had our hearts broken because we loved deeply. And to learn that broken hearts can heal and love again. But one day at a time. I would love to hear more about her – she looks like she was a lively pack of energy. She’s with you still, right there in your heart. Sending good wishes! -

Kimberly, what a beautiful tiger indeed, intense eyes! Best wishes to you in your grief. May you meet with understanding and comfort at this time, and I am so glad you came here. You are among people who know your pain and who will listen. -

Brony and Maureen, I love this, you making a pact because Lulu and Romeo would have wanted you to be happy and go on living good lives. They are safe and sound in your hearts and they are waiting for you to be able to feel that. Love to you both! -

Penny, I am so sorry you lost Donnie! I love the tattoo idea. You can touch it with love and think of him – not that you need it ato remind you. Over time it will get easier to think of him but I am glad you are standing up for yourself and not get a new pet to patch over your pain. People may mean well but they don’t know how deep your love is and therefore your grief. You will know when you are ready. Right now you honor Donnie and your life with him. Best wishes to you! -

Toni, I was sad to read about you losing Walter! You loved him and took care of his need to be free of pain first even though it breaks your heart. I know the pain of feeling the house being different and weird without them! Wishing you support and shoulders to cry on at this time! -

They are such big parts of our lives, aren’t they? I am sorry you lost Sammi. A quarter of a century that she was with you! We wish they could live with us as long as people do so we wouldn’t have to say goodbye so soon! Sammi seems to have been a full and equal family member, going with you and your daughters on trips and accompanying you to work. Sadly it will take a long time to get used to the new normal in your house. The void will not just go away and can’t easily be filled – but you’ll get to a place where you can talk about her affectionately, remembering your adventures without crying, just grateful you had her. Just like you mourn for people, and over time you are able to go on. You’ll never replace or forget her but she is in your heart and is part of you. So sorry! I am sending good wishes to you and your family! -

Colleen, I am so sad to read this! Boomer looks like a gentle soul. That is just the worst way to have to say goodbye. I agree with Toni: if it is at all possible for you to see a trauma person please do so. You have seen images that can’t be just forgotten, you need competent help to be able to go on. Boomer was there for your emotional support, and in a way he still is and will always be. Imagine what he would tell you. Yes, he would want you to grieve – and eventually be well again. That was his job. He still watches out for you. Please get help and stay connected to people who understand, like the beautiful people in this community. I am sending many good wishes! -

Maureen, I appreciate that you are so open and vulnerable with your grief! As you say, at the beginning we have no capacity to feel for anyone but ourselves. With courage you open your heart a little and are able to feel compassion and see that we’re not alone with what we are experiencing. All the while our own grief is going through changes and we are able to help others who are at the beginning of this journey – because we understand! And it helps. It doesn’t make the grief go away but it takes the sharp edges off and gets us out of isolation. I love seeing your comments for others in the community. Romeo would be proud of you! -

Hi, LaRonda, this must be so hard! I am sorry life is so dark for you these days. And I am sure Harry would want you to open your heart again. As Toni says, we can never and we don’t want to replace a beloved pet. Harry was unique and will stay forever in your heart. But I am sure he has friends and fellows who are desperate to find a home. You can save someone from having a life in a shelter who would like your love and attention. You can do it for Harry, dedicate it to Harry. There is so much need out there and you can do something about it. You have love to give – and receive. Please consider it. Best wishes to you! -

Yuvonne, behind every little memorial candle that gets lit is a story with a sad end. I am sorry you find yourself here but also glad that you reached out for help: there are people here willing to listen and help you mourn Milo. Talking about him is hard and sad but it also shows your love and appreciation and over time it will unburden your heavy heart. Tell us about Milo and make him known to us if you can. Best wishes to you! -

Lovetta, what a beautiful cat Mojo is! Did she have green eyes? How are you doing? I hope you have people around you who understand your grief and are able to listen. And there is a whole community of people here who can relate and are willing to help you through this. What did you like most about Mojo? What is your favorite memory of her? If you cannot talk about that yet I understand. But some day you will be able to remember her with love and without tears. I am sending good wishes! -

Elisabeth, I am sorry you lost Nicka! It is never long enough, is it? I would like to hear more about her and about your life with her. No matter how they leave us, because of illness or old age or an accident, it is heartbreak every time. Please tell us about her and keep her alive this way. It is hard to make the transition from grieving their death to feeling them inside of us and being able to talk about them without tears, remembering their whimsies and habits. I wish you the best! -

What a sweet face he has! I know how you wait for them to show up where they used to be! When I would drive up to my house my cat Drew would welcome me. He could hear I was coming from the sound of my car! It’s been 3 years and I still for a split second expect him to sit there waiting for me. But now I think more about how cute and funny he was. And your boy is safe now, no aches or pains due to age or illness. Sometimes I think we are courageous to give our hearts away again and again because we know it’s not forever. But the time we have with them is precious and stays with us. All the memories and stories. I hope you have support to help heal your heart, a friend or your family. And you have this group. Talking about them helps. Sending good wishes! - Load More
