Martha, yep. The anniversaries and holidays are specific dates that bring on big memories. Especially the first year of our saying goodbye. With your sadness, can you find some joy? You don’t have to, but I hope you can include some of the wonderful parts of your time with Raina. She rreally was such a sweetie and joy. I hope you can allow yourself to treasure that, too. Here’s a really big {HUG} for you. -

Maureen, Powerful chemicals are stimulated with our emotions – think of the “fight or flight” syndrome where our bodies secrete tons of adrenaline – similarly, we are awash with chemicals and hormones when elated, in love, or in grief. Tests show a difference in the chemicals found in tears of joy vs. tears of grief. They are powerful, and can be mitigated with deliberate choices to bring forth happy and good memories – “choose joy” – to create more “happy” hormones. And, it can be sort of addicitive bacause your body iliterally has those chemicals in it. An exercise you can try is my “ruler” – think of your time with Romeo in inches with each year = 1 inch. You and Romeo shared 14 years (inches) of joy, fun and love, and just a fraction at the end was bad. Now, each day spend time in one of the first 13 inches. Allow yourself to be happy, at least for awhile each day, throughout the day. Romeo would tell you that, don’t you think? That way you are not forgetting him, but are honoring his life with you. You will never forget him, so please don’t let that stand in your way of remembering him with joy. You see you are not alone and that our caring community is sharing your grief and theirs, and I hope some helpful ideas to help you heal guilt-free, knowing that being happy for the life you and Romeo shared is a tribute, and not “forgetting”. Quite the opposite. I’m sending you a {BIG HUG} and looking forward to hearing more from you. Your words of support to others is so very kind, and appreciated by all. Hopefully you find some comfort in sharing your understanding with others. Toni -

Thank you for your kind words and generous contribution to Faithful Friends.
We exist to be a support for those of us who love and lose our beloved pets. We’ve all felt and had to deal with the pain that is like no other, and the empty places in our homes and hearts.
I try to share some exercises that may help us remember why we opened our hearts in the first place, and can help us honor our babies by recalling the many fun, funny and loving times we shared, not just the sadness and pain of saying goodbye.
Please keep posting in the Community. I see your note to Lulu here and encourage you to write more to her. And think what she might write to you – gratitude for your care and love.
If you can join our group the third Thursday of each month, we’d love to have you.
With purrs and hugs,
Toni -

Wow, how lucky for you both to have 17 wonderful years together, Amber. It’s never long enough, is it? But what a long time to share the loving life you did. It hurts in places and ways nothing else does, but if you can, when you can, I hope you will think of the many, many good times and things you shared, and that you find comfort there, knowing what a great pet parent you were. Because you were, Ambber. Please let us know how you are moving along. {{HUG}} Toni -

That’s what I remind myself about Walter, too, Tana. He isn’t at risk of his mass bursting and dying in extreme pain. There is a lot of comfort (in our heads) but in our hearts, it hurts. Please be happy for Zoey’s life and love, and that she’s out of harms way now. I’m thinking of you. (HUGS). -

Brony, yes you will always carry them in your heart and thoughts. Please try to think of your times together like a ruler with each year being an inch. You had 18 and 14 inches of wonderful love, fun and joy, and just a half inch of them not being well. Take a memory from each of those inches and allow yourself to celebrate and be happy for them, and for you and the life you shared. Of course you cry and are broken in your heart and soul. That’s what deep love brings with goodbye, but you gave them their best life and I hope you find comfort knowing that. Our next group meeting is July 20th and I hope you join us. Until then, please keep us posted on how you are. Toni -

This picture makes me smile and I hope you are, too. What a fun memory to mix into your “stew of grief” to help ease your pain a wee bit. Was Molly a miniature King Charles? Isn’t it wonderful she had such a beautiful “playground”!! -

It sounds as if she had some strokes. Poor little thing. She’s at peace now and I hope you and your family find some comfort in that. {{HUGS}} Toni -

Marsha, I am sorry my last message said Martha (I’m not the best typist), but I am struck by Molly catching fish! May we see some pictures of that if you have them? What a fun life she had in the woods among critters. I am happy you and your husband think of Molly – what a gift to have sweet memories, do you think? I am truly sorry you had to say goodbye, but also truly glad for the thirteen years of joy and love you shared. Toni -

Tana, Thank You. Thank you for sharing so honestly and deeply. Our community is here for you, your husband, and please let your daughter know – we are here for her, too. Zoe was, and if you allow her to be, still is, a major source of support for each and all of you. She is not physically there but you know darn tight well she is still with, and within you all. They say “Be the person your pet thinks you are” and I often think of that. Zoe knew each of you as the heroes you are, and I hope you keep and honor her spirit knowing that. What a charming photo. Please send us more, and please share more with us. I am, we are, thinking of you. Toni -

I am sorry, Martha. What a darling girl Molly was. How long were you together? As we heal through our grieving, it helps to recall the fun, funny and loving times we shared, but there are always those moments when you look for them, expect to see them come say “hi”, or reach for their food and it hits you – I miss my baby, That’s a great moment to allow yourself to think of them and cherish the time we were gifted to share. Let us know more about Molly, and how you are doing. Toni -

Barbara, As a fellow adopter of senior animals, I thank you for sharing your experiences, insights and knowledge with our Community. If we can help others, we’ve done a good thing. One thing I’ve learned and take to heart is that, while we love them so much we don’t want to let them go, we love them enough TO let them go, especially in a peaceful fashion if we can. Apache Princess is so fortunate to have you by her side as she ages, a loving companion who pays attention to her needs and provides the best of care for her. You are really a gift to her, too. You must keep us posted about her, and please share more of your experiences, and kindness. I am sending you both {{BIG BIG HUGS). Toni Oh, please try to join one of our online group meetings. -
