Hi everyone! I’m in distress as my 14 year pug has a collapsing trachea which has gotten worse. I see him wanting to go for a walk or chew a bone or even him wanting to bark, and all I hear is his excessive coughing and gasping. The vet says it’s not his time just yet. I still see the playful begging pug he always was. It’s very tough for me to hear him make these horrible noises. ☹️ -

I have a friend who lost her 16 year old dog, Princess, the other day. She is all by herself and lives a plane ride away from me. I’m worried about her as she is taking this loss so hard and says “unless you are an animal lover, people don’t understand. Any thoughts on what to say/do for her? I’ve lost my dog and know her pain.

You are a good friend to help her, Laurie. She needs to know there are others who truly undertsand the depth of her pain. Here are a few things you can do to help her:
1. Acknowledge her pain as real and deep. (which you’ve done, but keep doing)
2. Ask her what she is doing in memory of her beloved. Can she make a tribute box of favorite toys, blankets, photos?
3. Write to Princess telling her how she feels, and what she loves about their times together-fun, funny, loving and challenging times. She might also write what she thinks Princess would want her to know, as if written from Princess.
4. You can make a contribution in memory of Princess to a shelter.
5. Have your friend attend our group support meeting January 18th at 7PM Eastern The link is under “Events”.
6. Encourage her to light a candle and create a memorial to Princess in our caring community. She will find many kind people to lend her support.
Laurie, please let me know if this helps her, and how we might further support her.
I am sending you both my best wishes, and sympathy. Toni

Thank you Toni. Your words and kindness to all of use is a wonderful gift. Murphy has laryngeal paralysis which seems to get worse each day. I feel as if I am watching him suffocate to death. He was so playful and energetic just a week ago and now he’s a completely different dog. Again thank you for being here for me and others like me. ❤️ -

Having extreme anticipatory grief for my 14 year old pug, Murphy. He is the light of my life and he’s slowing down more and more each day. And he’s not eating well. It makes me so sad.-
Oh Laurie. In a way, anticipating the loss of Murphy will be worse than the day you actually say goodbye, because you are seeing his decline and struggles. When he is peacefully at rest, I think you will feel better for his sake. You will be devastated, but you already are now. I share your grief. I have seen my beloveds falter and fail, and the day we say goodbye is a good day. Walking in your home will be a terrible thing and I hope you will reach out to us at that time. May I ask you this: for the many years of love and fun you and Murphy shared, would you trade it? Even though we know, in our heads, that one day we will have to part, we willingly and happily enter into a relationship that we know will bring sadness. In our hearts, we can find joy in the years we shared, and you know Murphy lived his best life with you, don’t you? Laurie, I am truly so very sorry you and Murphy are at this phase of your lifelong, loving relationship, and I hope you can pull forth the many, many wonderful joys you shared. Please, join our group meeting November 16th to talk about Murphy and let us know how you are doing. We are here for you💔Toni
