@rhohn61 Barbie! What a fun name, Rebecca. What kind of pet was Barbie? May we see some photos of her? I am very sorry for your parting and invite you to tell us about your lives together, and let us know how you are doing. It’s so very hard to have lost a beloved friend and we are all here for, and with, you. Toni

These darned anniversaries and holidays are tough, Maureen. At one of our group meetings it was suggested we also mark the day of birth or adoption to celebrate the wonderful time and life we were gifted to share. I like that idea but understand how we count the days and months since parting. You are kind, generous and gracious to share your own sympathy and understanding with others and I hope you find a bit of comfort in comforting others. I am still so sorry for your pain and hope you are finding a little more joy each day. We;re here and thinking of you. Toni

Faith, Are you finding it a bit easier to recall the good times now? We can feel guilty for being happy with our memories – as if that means we are losing our love. That’s not what’s happening. We’re seeing our grief as another part of loving so much, and beginning to celebrate life with Jojo as the gift it was. I hope you are including the good times with your thoughts. You might want to share some happy photos with us, too. Keep us updated. And join us the 15th if you can. Toni

I lost my kitty Callie on March 30 2023 I got her cremated she’s back home with me but it’s still really hard not having her here anymore I miss her so much

            • I met Callie when she came to my back door of my apartment I was living at in 2016 she came to me 3 days before my grandson’s birthday my grandson passed away and 2014. Callie was with me for 8 years. Callie was a calico kitty she was very friendly and loving.
              • How touching it must have been for you, Sally – to have Callie come to you, to bring you joy, love and comfort. Callie had a loving, long life with you, and we can never have them long enough, but don’t you feel your life was enriched by having Callie with you? Now the hard part – the emptiness of your home, and missing her. I encourage you to come to our group Thursday the 15th – I think you will find great support and understanding, and you can share with us. Toni

                • Callie was my world and now is is gone feels to lonely with out her being her with me
                  • Sally, When I said goodbye to my girl I was happy for her release and relief. She was old and unwell. However, the second I walked in my home, I was devastated – she wasn’t there and would not be again. The emptiness of our surroundings and changes to our daily routines is hard and takes time to adjust to. You will, Sally. I will never recommend getting another pet until you’re ready, but much to my surprise, ten days later I took in a one year old kitty whose mother was in hospital, and he really filled my world. (He went back to her three months later and broke my heart again, but he pulled me back into the lovely, loving world.) Take your time, be kind to yourself knowing the wonderful life you shared qith Callie, and one day you will find smiles before tears with her memory. (HUGS) Toni

Thank you, Sigrid and Toni for your responses. You are very kind. Yesterday was a hard day. It marked the 5 month mark of Romeo’s passing. I spent the entire day reading other people’s posts about their loss. I found myself not able to comment on most, but, did manage to show compassion for others who were just beginning this awful journey with grief. I hate that for them because it is so painful and raw. In some ways, I feel that’s where I am. I am trying my best to honor Romeo’s memory with happy thoughts instead of tears, but, it’s so hard. It’s the beginning of another day here and I’ve had my usual morning meltdown. Sending hugs 🫂 to all who are grieving here and everywhere else. This is the sadest place to be. 💔

Maureen, I appreciate that you are so open and vulnerable with your grief! As you say, at the beginning we have no capacity to feel for anyone but ourselves. With courage you open your heart a little and are able to feel compassion and see that we’re not alone with what we are experiencing. All the while our own grief is going through changes and we are able to help others who are at the beginning of this journey – because we understand! And it helps. It doesn’t make the grief go away but it takes the sharp edges off and gets us out of isolation. I love seeing your comments for others in the community. Romeo would be proud of you!

Hi, LaRonda, this must be so hard! I am sorry life is so dark for you these days. And I am sure Harry would want you to open your heart again. As Toni says, we can never and we don’t want to replace a beloved pet. Harry was unique and will stay forever in your heart. But I am sure he has friends and fellows who are desperate to find a home. You can save someone from having a life in a shelter who would like your love and attention. You can do it for Harry, dedicate it to Harry. There is so much need out there and you can do something about it. You have love to give – and receive. Please consider it. Best wishes to you!

Do you ever feel afraid to open your heart again? The thought of saying goodbye is too hard to take? That’s understandable, especially after the death of a beloved pet. I’m feeling it now as I anticipate Walter’s illness advancing and the day of parting we’re facing. I am reluctant to begin a new relationship. For me that will change with time, I know. Some are able to bring a new love into their homes and hearts soon, for some it may take years, or it may be never. However, or whenever you welcome a new family member, know you are not “replacing” your lost baby, but are giving another the chance for a loving, wonderful life. And you get to love, and be loved, again. 💕 Toni

Maureen, I find sharing support helps ease a bit of my own grief. I always say “Joy shared is joy doubled, grief shared is grief halved”. You are very knid to share your sympathies and we all appreciate that. It’s a slog, moving through grief, and can’t be rushed, but thinking of good times with Romeo may help you, and knowing you gave him his best life and love may bring you some comfort. Do you think Romeo would want you to be happy for the lives you shared, and want you to be happy for that? I do. I hope you can join our group June 15th – you’ll meet some very kind people who undertsand and care. Stay in close touch, Maureen. We’re thinking of you. Toni

Marianne, It is understandable that you are hurting. No matter how long we are together, even knowing Max had a long, loving, wonderful life with you, it’s never long enough for us. Your life and home have changed in a big way and it takes time to settle in anew. I am, we are, so sorry. I hope you will think of the good, fun and funny times you and Max shared and that those memories bring you smiles and joy. You might even write down some of your fondest memories and “send” them to Max. You can share some of those stories here, and please join our kind, caring group June 15th to share more with us. {{HUGS}} Toni

Hi Toni, thank you for your kindness. I am still having difficulty dealing with losing my Romeo. It will be 5 months on the 6th. I am still just so very heartbroken and I’m just having a slow go of it. I am better some days, but, then I have days where I cry a great deal. I know there is nothing I can do to rush through this process. But, that’s okay, because I don’t want to ever forget Romeo and grieving keeps him alive somehow.

Showing compassion to others comes naturally to me. I’ve always been that way, even though in the beginning of this sad journey of mine I didn’t have the capacity to feel for anyone but myself. So, the fact that I am able to show compassion to others once again must mean I’ve made some progress in dealing with my own grief. It is so heartbreaking to read every day just how many people are losing their fur babies. 💔
Thank you for being here for all of us.
