• I may have to make the decision no pet parent wants to make.

    • I know, Dianne. My cats’ progressive internal disease may have become cancer and I can have her biopsied under anesthesia, and if it’s cancer, start chemo pills, but with her failing kidneys, which chemo can worsen, and other health challenges (slight anemia (which chemo can also worsen), high blood pressure and thyroid, I won’t put her through either the procedure nor the chemo. She’s in good spirits and seemingly no pain, so we’ll go for as long as she’s “feline fine”, then it will be time to say goodbye. If she was younger, not almost 18, of course it would be different. George is 14 and, sorry to say, is also considered “senior” in the cat world. I know everyone in our community is with you and here for you. Maybe George will start to feel better soon. I hope so ๐Ÿ™‚
    • Hi.Well my mama cat is still the same.I give her 5ml of Pedialyte every two hours. Her poop is the consistency of soft serve ice cream, which is better than it was.
I have to take a fecal sample in to see what’s going on.If there are no parasites, then I may have to decide my next course of action.
For now,she eats like a pig,but is anorexic looking. And no, I am not starving her.Mama turns 14 next April.I am worried dearly about her.

I definitely will.I told the vet’s office she is eating, and they said it was a good thing.
      • So I called another vet today.I am going to have Florida Aid to Animals do a fecal test on my mama cat to check for parasites. She is now butt scooting on my floor. She is eating well, and her poops are forming but soft, and that is better than it has been.
Unless the vet absolutely feels like there is something majorly wrong,I am not putting George to sleep.

      • Dianne Kurtz posted a new activity comment 4 years, 9 months ago

I correct myself, I have seen her scoot her rump on the floor.

Well George’s diarrhea is better. It has become like soft serve ice cream.
I do not want to have her put down because I am actually thinking she may have worms. She is eating, and I am continuing the Pedialyte, not a lot,but every 2 hours.I love her to death,if I can prolong her life, I will. But if the vet says otherwise, then I will take it from there.I have never seen her scoot her rump on the floor, but I am thinking her issue may be controllable.
          • Well I have been giving Mama George Pedialyte to stop her diarrhea, which seems to help. The vet will determine if mama needs to be put to sleep or not.If she needs to be put down, then I have the money to do so.My issue is I would like to have her cremated and have her ashes back. But it will cost $175 .Otherwise,I have two options…have her cremated for $65 and the humane society will scatter her ashes under a tree,or bring her home and bury her.
I do not know if I am allowed to because I live in a mobile home park.I own my house, rent the lot.
I do not know what to do.

            • Dianne, some humane societies have funds to help with this type of situation. Maybe they will be able to assist you. Did you contact Waggle.org? What did they say?
              • Hi Dianne. What’s the update on George? I think of you both daily.

I am deeply sorry for your loss, and I completely understand how you feel.
                  • My heart is breaking as I am facing “that” decision to put mama cat to sleep.I am going to the Brevard Humane Society in Cocoa,FL.
They charge $30 to euthanize her,$50 if I want to watch.
I would love to have her cremated, but I do not have $175.
                    No negativity,please.I feel sick.

                    • Dianne, you have agonized over this for months, and George has been so up and down, that no one here would ever fault you (or anyone) for making this selfless gesture for her sake. I am terribly sorry and know how very deeply this hurts you. But poor little George will finally find relief and release, and that’s who we have to think of. I am sending you my heartfelt sympathy. Please check in with us over the next days, weeks and months, and let us be a support for you. Toni
                    • So I pretty much have figured out why mama cat has diarrhea. Before I moved, she was having the same issues. Her doctor said she has IBS.Which is treatable. So I am not going to end her life.I am going on Waggle to see if they can help me pay for necessary treatment for her IBS.I too have IBS and have the same issue as she has.

                      • Wonderful to hear. Be sure you mention Faithful Friends, and try to contact Crystal. She commented to your posts here. Do let us know what happens, Dianne. My cat has something like IBS (her is a progressive inflammatory disease) for which she takes antibiotics and steroids. I am hopeful for you both ๐Ÿ™‚
                      • Well my Mama George is still the same, but no improvement. She looks really lost and is starting to forget basic things like how to eat, drink and use her litter box.She is ruining my laminate floors.I now catch mama attempting to go to the bathroom wherever, and she cannot continue this.I may end up putting her to sleep. What she is showing are signs of feline dementia.
And no,I cannot afford to continually take her to the vet as I live off of monthly SS8.Plus I cannot drive anymore, so finding a ride can be difficult.
I have mixed emotions on what to do these days.

                        • Dianne, you are in a very tough, sad spot. We always want to do what’s best for our beloved pets and it’s often hard to know what that is. Fiscal and physical constraints add a lot of challenge to that. Only you and George will decide, but may I again suggest you respond to Crystal at http://www.Waggle.org and see how, and if, they can help you? And Pet Loss at Home can have a vet come to you if it’s time to let George peacefully pass. https://petlossathome.com/
I know I am not alone in being concerned for you both, and wishing you the best in a sad situation. Let us know….

My mama cat’s name is actually George.I did not name her.
                            • Well, for all our sadness about her, “George” made me laugh…. great name! Remember “A Boy Named Sue”? Hope she’s okay today.

Toni,my mama cat stares into space a lot, like she has no idea of where she is at, or anymore, who I am.Her pottying in odd places is concerning because I always have a clean litter box for her.Like last night,I was in my room and looked up and she was going to pee on my bedroom floor…BUT ..I caught her in the right time and put her in the litter box.She is not the same anymore.I am worried. She sits in weird places that are open, and its like she forgot where she is going. And she startles more and that is new for me.She used to be very loveable, but anymore, when I pick her up,she acts like I am a stranger.
When it comes to eating, she looks at her food, not sure of what to do,but she does eventually does eat.My heart is breaking because she used to come to me to be petted, and would kiss me,but no more.
                                • I know, Honey. It IS heartbreaking. You’ll do what’s best for HER. We’re here for you as you move through these times. By the way, what is her name? Is it Mama Cat?
                                • Hello.Well..my mama cat is eating, and now threw up everything she ate last night.
I am seriously beginning to wonder if she is coming down with feline dementia, because she has a clean litter box,but is an inch away from the box,but doesn’t use it.She looks at me as if she has no idea as to who I am anymore.

                                  • Yep, Dianne, I share your situation with my girl – she’s going potty in odd places and staring into space. She also has hearing loss – I walk right up to her and she doesn’t hear me coming. She seems to feel good, but with her other medical problems, it’s clear she’s “showing her age” (17 1/2). I hope for ALL our sakes they just fall asleep and don’t awaken, but that’s me not wanting to have to make the decision to let her go if she begins to suffer.. You should take your girl to the vet – did you apply to Waggle.org? I think they will help pay the vet if you get in touch with Crystal. I am really sorry – I know it’s heartbreaking every day to watch her age. Let us know how it’s going. Hugs…..

                                      • Hello.
Well my mama cat is finally eating, and I have found a cat food she will actually eat.Her poo is becoming more solid than before.
To new pet parents, welcome.I am so sorry for your loss.My heart breaks for you.I completely understand your loss,as I lost my 15 and 1/2 year old faithful best friend last April 16th from cancer.

She is eating better than she has been wanting to.She is not having diarrhea, but it is soft and better than before.I am going to keep her and not put her to sleep.I am going to have her vet check her for worms.Yes she is my 13 year old love, and she may be thin, but I am going to figure out what is going on.However if the vet states she is sick and her quality of life is declining, then I will do what is best for her.She is 85% better, and I am so happy.
                                          • This is FABULOUS, Dianne. You know, three times this past year I was sure it was time to say goodbye to my 17 year old, but with medicines, diet and “catupuncture”, she is doing very well and ‘feline’ fine :-). Apply to Waggle.org for help with your Vet bills. The acupuncture has stimulated blood flow to my girl’s kidneys that were failing and now the are normal – not just better – normal! I’m a believer…. I am, we are all, so very delighted for you both. Light a candle in celebration!! And keep us posted…. Great news !!!!

                                              • Dianne, How are you two doing? I find, if I hold her plate and tilt it, especially so she gets the juices, she eats more. Please let us know what’s going on. Thinking of you…..
