@mkdw4304 Bear. What a great name, Mary. What kind of pet was Bear? May we hear about your lives together, see some photos, and hear from you about how you are doing? Toni

I\’ve been thinking about cancer and how it has taken so many of our fur babies. Tipper was my first I lost. But since him, I lost his brother and sister also to cancers. I lost his brother Oreo, the day I learned he had lung cancer, no warning signs. Christmas weekend 2017, he had some breathing problems, but managing. I thought maybe some respiratory infection, had been cold for several days and we had just moved into a new place. And being a holiday weekend. I took him to his vet the day after Christmas, December 26, 2017, I lost him later that day. After seeing his vet earlier, later I rushed him to the emergency clinic about 45 minutes away. He was on oxygen, but it wasn\’t helping, I helped him holding him and telling him he could go see older sister Princess, older brothers Jody and Tipper. Sister Lady was diagnosed with stomach cancer Thanksgiving weekend 2017. She crossed in the backseat of my on the way to the same emergency clinic, January 21, 2018. Oreo and Lady were 12 and Tipper was just shy of his 11th. So, my girl now, Apache Princess, adopted her when she was 11, because when I looked into her eyes, Tipper, Oreo and Lady were looking back through her eyes, I knew they wanted me to take her home. She\’s now 15 and still beating cancer. First surgery May 2019 a month shy of her one year with me. Large lump, right side, clean margins. Smaller lump right rear paw, trace of cells left to avoid reconstruction surgery. Regrowth on paw twice, most recent February 2023. But still non-spreadable. Her vet says she\’s strong and healthy for her age.-
Barbara, As a fellow adopter of senior animals, I thank you for sharing your experiences, insights and knowledge with our Community. If we can help others, we’ve done a good thing. One thing I’ve learned and take to heart is that, while we love them so much we don’t want to let them go, we love them enough TO let them go, especially in a peaceful fashion if we can. Apache Princess is so fortunate to have you by her side as she ages, a loving companion who pays attention to her needs and provides the best of care for her. You are really a gift to her, too. You must keep us posted about her, and please share more of your experiences, and kindness. I am sending you both {{BIG BIG HUGS). Toni Oh, please try to join one of our online group meetings.

Wow, how lucky for you both to have 17 wonderful years together, Amber. It’s never long enough, is it? But what a long time to share the loving life you did. It hurts in places and ways nothing else does, but if you can, when you can, I hope you will think of the many, many good times and things you shared, and that you find comfort there, knowing what a great pet parent you were. Because you were, Ambber. Please let us know how you are moving along. {{HUG}} Toni

Amber, I am sorry for your loss of Amber. She was such a pretty girl. I know 17 years is a long time to have her, but no amount of time would have been enough. I wish I could have had my boy longer too. Peace be with you. 💔

Amber, what a beautiful photo of Sara! You have come to the right place to talk about her, about your long – and too short – life together. All of us had our hearts broken because we loved deeply. And to learn that broken hearts can heal and love again. But one day at a time. I would love to hear more about her – she looks like she was a lively pack of energy. She’s with you still, right there in your heart. Sending good wishes!

Thank you everyone

Lola, No one can answer your question but you – “How to tell him”. Do you think it would be kinder for your brother if you wait until he’s released? Perhaps you can make a photo collection for him so he has that. You can post a lasting memorial for Angel in our Memorials tab. If he asks about Angel, you wouldn’t want to lie, but my inclination is to not bring it up unless he does. Let’s see what others in our Comunity say. I am sorry for the loss of Angel. What a little darling. Toni -

Fifteen years, 100 years – it’s never long enough for us to be with our darlings. Leigh, reading how small and sad Sammi was when you met, and how much love and fun she had with you, I hope your many memories of the good life you shared bring you joy. Sammi was so happy for her life with you and I am sure she wants you to be happy, too. Each day can you think of, maybe write down, a fun or funny memory? I find it helps to deliberately recall those. Our group meets tonight at 7 EST if you would like to come share with us. Link is under “Events”. Toni -

@shianne Suzanne, Thank you for kind words of sympathy, and THANK YOU for sharing your thoughts that you may have waited too long for dear Spirit. You have done our community a service by sharing that. I had lunch with a friend whose cat had a mass similar to Walter’s that ruptured. My friend told me “Toni, she was in agony. Don’t let that happen to Walter”. I heard and heeded those words every day and it made the decision so much easier, knowing Walter wouldn’t suffer the unneccessary pain his beloved cat did. I may have waited too long last year with my Deanna “Beauty Girl”, too. We learn to let go before they needlessly suffer and I hope you find comfort for yourself knowing Autumn Ranger and Saraya received the best of your love in letting them go. You are a kind, loving pet person and I am truly grateful to have you in our community. My best wishes and thoughts are with you. Toni

Thank you all for you soothing words of kindness and understanding, not just for my loss(es), but for each and everyone here in our caring community. It does help to both hear from others and share my own sympathy for your losses. I am choosing to recall the fun, funny and sweet things Walter did and was. He was better longer than he was ‘bad’ (unwell) and I am so grateful he was doted on, adored, cared for and loved as his life wound down. And I am deeply grateful for this community. Thank you 🤗Hope to see you tomorrow in our group meeting. -

Penny, I am so sorry you lost Donnie! I love the tattoo idea. You can touch it with love and think of him – not that you need it ato remind you. Over time it will get easier to think of him but I am glad you are standing up for yourself and not get a new pet to patch over your pain. People may mean well but they don’t know how deep your love is and therefore your grief. You will know when you are ready. Right now you honor Donnie and your life with him. Best wishes to you! -

Toni, I was sad to read about you losing Walter! You loved him and took care of his need to be free of pain first even though it breaks your heart. I know the pain of feeling the house being different and weird without them! Wishing you support and shoulders to cry on at this time! -

They are such big parts of our lives, aren’t they? I am sorry you lost Sammi. A quarter of a century that she was with you! We wish they could live with us as long as people do so we wouldn’t have to say goodbye so soon! Sammi seems to have been a full and equal family member, going with you and your daughters on trips and accompanying you to work. Sadly it will take a long time to get used to the new normal in your house. The void will not just go away and can’t easily be filled – but you’ll get to a place where you can talk about her affectionately, remembering your adventures without crying, just grateful you had her. Just like you mourn for people, and over time you are able to go on. You’ll never replace or forget her but she is in your heart and is part of you. So sorry! I am sending good wishes to you and your family! -

Toni,
I’m so sorry to
Hear of the passing of Walter. In the short time he was with you in his final fur ever home you both touched each other’s lives and once again your heart is hurting and has another hole, hopefully at the right time to be filled by another fur baby in need of a loving fur ever home as Walter was.
As hard as it is to say good bye for the final time you made the right decision to set him free of his pain Hindsight bring for sight, I let my spirit suffer longer than she should have because I was selfish and wasn’t ready to say goodbye. While the decision to set Autumn Ranger and Saraya free wasn’t easy I tried to be less selfish and release them earlier on so they didn’t have to suffer anymore
You and everyone else mourning the loss of a beloved animal or human are in my prayers. -

Leigh, I am so sorry for your loss of Sammi. 😞 What a wonderfully long life she had. I understand what you’re feeling and the grief is unbearable. Life does change suddenly when we lose our fur babies. We miss everything about them and the things they did. The house is quieter now and the silence is deafening.
Sending you hugs 🫂 and I wish you peace. 💔 - Load More
