Hi. I am grieving the passing of my dear, sweet, mischievous, fun-loving toy schnauzer, Bear. He was given to me by a dear friend that runs a rescue. I got him at age 2. At age 3, he started exhibiting bladder stones so he had surgery to remove them. The vet office kept an eye on his liver enzymes, and the numbers kept rising. She recommended for him to have portosystemic shunt surgery. A referral was sent to the University of Minnesota. I did extensive research on the topic, asking other schnauzer owners about their experiences with this operation, reading articles about it on line and prayer. I decided for Bear to have the surgery because he was overall, a happy and healthy pup and did not exhibit any of the shunt congenital symptoms. He went in on 8/12 and had the surgery. However, 24-48 hours later, Bear was showing signs of frequent seizuring activity. On 8/14/25, Bear was put down because the Critical Care Vet felt Bear was cognitively brain dead and there was no hope for him to return as the dog that he once was. With two very good friends by my side, I held him in my lap and told him how thankful that he was in my life and how much I loved him and will miss him. I am grieving terribly. He was my baby Bear and I truly loved him with all my heart and sole!!! I also feel guilty for putting him through this. If I hadn’t, he would still be alive and with me.😢

    • Heidi, I am heartbroken reading your very touching account of the challenges you and Bear faced💔
You did what you could to help Bear based on the information you and guidance you received. That is all we can do – our best, always from a place of love and concern. Guilt is a part of caring for our beloved babies – did I do too much? Could I have done more? Did I wait too long or was it too sonn?
I hope you can find comfort knowing you did what you thought was best for Bear. If you can, please join our group meeting this Thursday, August 21st at 7PM EST, 4PM Pacific to talk about it with our kind friends. And pleases keep posting here. It can help to share. With my sincere and deep sympathy, Toni

💔Jean, it’s only been a few months since you said goodbye to Bradley and it is understandable that you and Sadie are still mourning his loss💔Perhaps you will join our kind group August 21st to talk about Bradley, and Sadie. It can help to share with people who understand. There is no set time for grieving and healing but I do hope that each day is a bit easier for you both.
I don’t know how old you are, but I had neighbors in their 80’s who only adopted senior dogs. Yes, they said goodbye to a n umber of them, but the sweet old pups had a loving last few years. Maybe you could consider that if it would help you, and Sadie. Is Sadie also about 13? If so, she may find a new fur friend stressful.
Jean, please continue to share here with us – we truly care and are here for you. Sending you hugs, Toni

It’s been a difficult almost 4 months for both myself and Bradley’s fursister Sadie. At my age I cannot adopt anymore dogs and it’s breaking my heart.

💔Jeannette, I am so sorry for your loss, and happy for the many years of fun and love you were lucky to share. It’s a shame our sweeties are only “on loan” to, never for long enough (forever wouldn’t be long enough). Are your other two mourning? I bet they are. I hope you all find comfort with one another, and that your memories bring you smiles before tears. Please keep us updated about how you are doing, and join our kind, supportive group August 21st if you’d like. He was such a perfect dog. When I brought him home he measured from my finger tip to my wrist. He lived to be 16 years old. I am so glad he picked me. I have two other fur babies, but I still miss him so much.

💔😪Oh Suzanne, how heartbreaking. I am sharing tears with you as I write this and want you to know how special you are to care so much for so many loving little lives. It only takes a moment to fall in love, and a lifetime to cherish whatever time we are lucky to share. I adopted Walter when his human died and he was only with me five months. He was 15 and had a fast growing malignant tumor. I loved himdearly and I ache when I remember how sweet and wonderful he was, but, like you and Kalina, he had a loving, safe, comfortable, and I hope somewhat fun, end of life with me. It is good that you know how much better Kalina’s life was in your loving care, and I am glad you wrote such a heartfelt letter to her. Please light as many candles as you like for Kalina and Oliver. Please give Sebastian and the others hugs and pets from me. We are always here for you. I hope to see you again at the monthly meeting August 21st. I am thinking of you with sympathy. Toni

I love this group and really appreciate all the support and understanding it provides I just wish I didn’t have to be back here posting again, less than, 4 months after suddenly saying good bye to my Oliver on March 29. Last Friday July 26, I had to suddenly say good bye to my sweet toothless 13 year old senior Kalina, who became part of my family on May 4, 2025. In the short time Kalina was a part of the family she made a huge impact on our lives and made an even bigger hole in my heart, which was already grieving Oliver’s sudden passing in March. While I knew I was on borrowed time with you I never expected to lose you so suddenly. Knowing what I know about your life prior to your being rescued by Lisa your foster mom, then letting me become your human I knew you’d had a hard life. I’m sure your previous human tried, she just fell on hard times and her roommate obviously didn’t care about animals at all or she never would’ve thrown you and your sister into a basket and placed you on the porch on a frigid cold February night. I hope in the short time you allowed me to be your human mom that you felt loved, cherished and cared for. I hope you’ll forgive me for constantly putting food in your face to encourage you to eat, but I only did what I thought was best looking back, I realize now that you’re disinterest in food was because your body had begun to shut down; you were slowly dying on me. I hope at least when you chose to eat that you enjoyed your favorite treat, Churros lickables. I will never forget how you’d remind me to give one to you each night before bed. Thank you for being a wonderful senior companion to Sebastian, who like me is also mourning your passing and the passing of his bonded brother Oliver, on March 29 of this year. While your time with us was brief You really encouraged and helped Sebastian to become less timid. Thanks to yours and Sebastian‘s brief companionship, he’s now venturing out from under the recliner more frequently and spending quality time with his human. I’m thankful that Sebastian and I were able to be there to say goodbye to you as you peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge to be reunited with your bonded sister, that you lost earlier in March while I never met her I’m sure she was as sweet and precious as you were. you were only a part of our family for a few short months but the hole that you left in my heart will take a long time to heal. I will when the time is right, and my heart is healed some adopt another senior cat in your memory, as a companion for Sebastian, who is in need of a loving forever home , as you once were. Your heartbroken mom, Sebastian and you’re annoying fur brothers, Takoda and Oreo.
