Good morning to all of us who lost a beloved pet. I wanted to tell you about an idea that I had for helping me with grief. I am still grieving about losing my two sweet cats, Tim and Lulu last year. What affected me even harder was the loss of my mother just when the pandemic started and I could not fly over there to be with her. With the help of therapy and good friends I have come to realize that she will always be with me, right there in my heart. But often I feel myself missing the physical part, being able to hug her. One sleepless night I had an idea: I have a little pillow that she gave me and I knew that you can transfer photos on fabric. So I had one of my favorite photos of her put on fabric (I found the service on Etsy, I can post the link if you are interested) and sewed it on the pillow case. Now when I need a little more than memories I hug the pillow and think of her. Definitely nothing like the real thing but it helps a little. We can do the same with the pets we lost and grieve: every little bit helps, I think.

Karen Strachan posted an update I have always had more than 2 pets. When my husband had cancer, we adopted a little girl, Lily Belle. She was being trained as a service dog for my adult grandson, but because her training wasn\'t complete, his landlord would not let him keep her. My dogs were all very senior so my grandson asked if we would take her. In addition to the cancer, my husband had copd and couldn\'t lay in bed so slept in his lift chair. If he got up during the night, Lily would come get me (she would either sleep on his lap or on a pet bed next to his chair).

After he passed, I kept working part-time even though I am almost 75. In the 3 years since my husband\'s death, Lily was developing separation anxiety so I started looking for a companion for both of us. That is how Alfie was added to our small family. He is a rescue dog approximately 2 years old, (Lily is 5) and was dumped on the streets and badly abused (he is terrified of men and tries to bite most of them). He is now glued to me and is protective of both me and Lily. He has now accepted my son and my granddaughter\'s fiancee so is getting better.

Walter looks like a character and I agree: nothing is worse than to see them suffer! Yes, so much love is needed. Both my sweet cats, Tim and Lulu, passed away last year. I miss him sitting in front of the house where he would wait for us. He knew the sound of the car half a block away! And Lulu would drape herself all over my deck, making it very clear that this was her space and nobody else’s. My heart is healing but I decided to wait until the construction on our house is done by the end of the year hopefully. It would be too chaotic for them. So I teamed up with a neighbor to take care of the feral neighborhood cats. They are fiercely feral and I doubt I will be able to make them accept me closer than 4 feet away but it feels good to see them wait for me in the morning and evening and know somebody cares for them.

One month ago I said goodbye to darling little Walter. I just walked in my house fully expecting him to greet me. It\'s hard to get used to, and it takes time to adjust. But I am very happy for the time we shared, and that he is not in pain or danger of his mass rupturing. It takes awhile to find balance and ultimately, more joy than sadness. Hang in there everyone. I have not been doing well myself. I am still grieving hard and can\'t seem to move forward. I think I have figured out why. I feel so comfortable in my grief now and. It is a safe place for me to be where I can never forget my Romeo. I know this is not healthy, but, I feel so bad when I am not thinking of him because I don\'t want him to think I\'m forgetting him. So, I stay stuck in the loop of reliving his last moments over and over and it brings me to tears. Maybe crying makes me feel good because I am grieving over him and honoring his memory. I can\'t let go....I just can\'t. My life consists of just getting through each day. Waiting for all of this to end. I have never, ever been this broken in my life and I don\'t see an end to it at this time. 💔

Out of great love, and with heavy heart, I said goodbye to my beloved Walter this morning. We know he had a mass and I\'ve been watching for signs that he was declining. This morning his stool was liquid again, it had a little blood in it, and he didn\'t cover it in the litter box. His way of saying \"Hey Mom, I\'m not doing well\". Similar to the way Sweetness let Karen know something was wrong. I was surprised at how quickly I could make the decision to give him a peaceful passing, but being aware of his illness made the decision, not easy, but clear. I always say the hard part comes when the house is empty and different, and that\'s what I\'ll be dealing with now. But I am grateful for the time we had together and the love we shared. I\'ll post a Memorial to my Darling in a few days. Toni💔

They are such big parts of our lives, aren’t they? I am sorry you lost Sammi. A quarter of a century that she was with you! We wish they could live with us as long as people do so we wouldn’t have to say goodbye so soon! Sammi seems to have been a full and equal family member, going with you and your daughters on trips and accompanying you to work. Sadly it will take a long time to get used to the new normal in your house. The void will not just go away and can’t easily be filled – but you’ll get to a place where you can talk about her affectionately, remembering your adventures without crying, just grateful you had her. Just like you mourn for people, and over time you are able to go on. You’ll never replace or forget her but she is in your heart and is part of you. So sorry! I am sending good wishes to you and your family!

Colleen, I am so sad to read this! Boomer looks like a gentle soul. That is just the worst way to have to say goodbye. I agree with Toni: if it is at all possible for you to see a trauma person please do so. You have seen images that can’t be just forgotten, you need competent help to be able to go on. Boomer was there for your emotional support, and in a way he still is and will always be. Imagine what he would tell you. Yes, he would want you to grieve – and eventually be well again. That was his job. He still watches out for you. Please get help and stay connected to people who understand, like the beautiful people in this community. I am sending many good wishes!

Maureen, I appreciate that you are so open and vulnerable with your grief! As you say, at the beginning we have no capacity to feel for anyone but ourselves. With courage you open your heart a little and are able to feel compassion and see that we’re not alone with what we are experiencing. All the while our own grief is going through changes and we are able to help others who are at the beginning of this journey – because we understand! And it helps. It doesn’t make the grief go away but it takes the sharp edges off and gets us out of isolation. I love seeing your comments for others in the community. Romeo would be proud of you!

Maureen posted an update Hi, I just wanted to come here to tell all of you that I had the hardest Mother\'s Day on Sunday and I\'m sure there are a lot of you here that did and I am sorry to you too. I\'m still going through this terrible grieving process and I\'m not sure if I\'m ever going to get past it. People don\'t get why and I just tell them it\'s because I was Romeo\'s mommy and now he\'s gone. I ask them how they refer to their spouse or significant other when telling their pet to go find them? They say \" I tell him to go find Mommy / Daddy\". Then, they get it! I know some never will and that\'s okay because I just stay away from those negative, judgemental ones.
My heart is still so broken right now 💔
Thank you for letting me vent.

He could hear I was coming from the sound of my car! It’s been 3 years and I still for a split second expect him to sit there waiting for me. But now I think more about how cute and funny he was. And your boy is safe now, no aches or pains due to age or illness. Sometimes I think we are courageous to give our hearts away again and again because we know it’s not forever. But the time we have with them is precious and stays with us. I love it that the community is working: people who know what you are going through chiming in and letting you know you are not alone in your grief. It doesn’t bring anybody back but the pain of grief is so much harder to bear when you have to do it all alone. And many people don’t know the strong ties that connect us with our furry friends. Some even belittle or judge your grief. Not here. Please find comfort in this place that is created to hear you and to make space for your grief – AND stories about your beloveds quirks and joys and endearing habits. I love to see the photos that go with the names and I appreciate to get to know about this special friend. I love to read how people go through stages of grief, how they take courage from talking and remembering and being vulnerable by describing the pain and loss. I see that many stay with the community and write about healing and moving on without giving up what was so special about this love. This is a truly good place.

I hope you have shoulders to cry on; there are people here in this community who understand your grief and will listen to what you feel like telling us about him. It does not bring him back but it keeps him alive. In Isabel Allende’s book Eva Luna the mother says to her daughter “People die only when we forget them. Hi LaRonda, I love what you say about Harry: first you rescued him and then he rescued you. They do that, don’t they? It is hard to go on without him but he became part of you and that will never go away. He made you into who you are now and he’ll want you to look forward, eventually. Part of grieving is to learn how to feel them inside of you and to accept that while you lost their bodies their soul cannot be taken away from you. And that will give you the strength and courage to love again. You’ll never replace him in your heart but because you are richer than when you were before you met him you will be able to give again. And that’s beautiful. The sadness will never quite go away but the pain will get weaker – and your heart will be bigger. Sending you good wishes!

Maureen, I am glad you were able to see things from a different perspective. I am not religious but I know for sure that talking to Romeo will be good for you and maybe he’ll hear you. Nobody can prove the opposite so you might as well hold on to this comforting thought. And you are right, he would not want you to suffer. As Toni said be kind to yourself and put your love and grief in words and send them to Romeo. Friends hear you, this community hears you, and Romeo may hear you. You love him and he had a good life with you. Not that this is the time to think about that but you’re a good mom and there may be other dogs out there that need you once you are ready. You’ll never be able (nor would you want) to replace him but there is need out there for care and love that you can give just like you did for Romeo.

I relive that morning over and over again. I am so depressed and nothing is helping me to climb out of this dark place I\'m in. I hate feeling this way and I\'m trying to get better, but, this trauma has only been bringing out many things from my past that have happened which I have been suppressing for many, many year I still isolate and I don\'t think of the future at all. Maureen, Romeo looks adorable. Great name for him. I am so sorry you lost him. And yes, the trauma of losing him can dredge up old pain and unlived grief. You can dedicate your recovery to him by dealing with what needs to be dealt with. Bring it up, give it space and acknowledge it, hopefully with the help of a good friend or a therapist. I hope I am not overstepping here but I am talking out of my own experience. I know it sounds weird but you can consider it Romeo’s gift to you, getting rid of old aches and pains so you can love again. You are courageous to talk about your pain, that’s the first step, not suppressing your grief. as you did in the past. Your love for Romeo did that! Thank him and honor him by continuing on that path.

Hi Maryann, it’s Sigrid again. It takes a lot of time to heal. And I was wondering if you could pour the love you have for Penny into some cause that needs it, at a shelter for example or tending to feral cats in your neighborhood. I think in addition to missing Penny you also have no place or being to give your love to. It will not bring her back but you could dedicate your helpful activities to her, to honor her and to be grateful that she was in your life. This is no advice, just something I saw a neighbor do when her cat passed. She now takes good care of the feral cats around here, has them spayed or neutered, feeds them and finds homes for them. They would be lucky to have you.
