Canine dysautonomia
If you live in an area in the US with Chronic Wasting Disease in deer or in other areas of the world that have Mad Cow disease or if you travel through any of these areas you need to be aware of this horrible disease. Currently it is most commonly seen in Kansas, Missouri, and Wyoming. Dogs pick it up out of the soil or by walking through a contaminated area then licking their paws. It is most commonly seen in dogs 6-18 months in age but obviously there are outliers. Symptoms include: either inability to urinate with an easily expressed bladder or urinary incontinence, constipation or excessive straining to defecate or lack of bowel control, flaccid anus, drawn up third eyelids (seen above), permanently dialated pupils which leads to photosensitivity (also seen above), vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, dry congested nose, heart rate that remains constant even after exercise. Treatment is grueling, expensive, and very labor intensive. Some dogs respond well enough to treatment to live a semi normal life in remission with occasional flare ups. Many suffer before they finally succumb to this progressive, degenerative disease. I am choosing to spare Tosca of future suffering and will say goodbye later today. Her body will be donated to research in hopes that someday we can effectively prevent or treat dysautonomia

My friend just lost her puppy to canine dysautonomia. She had to put her young pup down. She was barely 3 months old. All our hearts are breaking.
