The first 3 pictures are of my baby Bear, my soulmutt that I wrote about earlier. He was so handsome. He was Queensland Blue Healer and Flat Coated Retriever, 105lbs of sweetheart. The last 2 pictures are of my Black Lab mix Ladiebug. She is the dogI saw with Bear for 2 weeks after he passed away. When I would be outside in the yard alone, working with my flowers and crying because I missed Bear so much I would hear his bark and as I\’d look up I\’d see him coming down the street next to our house and he had another dog with him that looked almost exactly like him, but was smaller and for some reason I knew it was a female. (who I called Stella) anyway they would turn the corner towards our house and then fade away about the time they got to the driveway gates. This went on everyday for 2 weeks, then stopped and I eventually let the other dog fade to the back of my mind. Then 8 months later on the night before my 50th birthday my fiance and I both dreamed about seeing Bear sitting in front of the local shelter. In the morning we told each other about our dreams and decided that it was Bear telling us it was time to adopt a new dog, and since it was my birthday, the start of a new year, and a new decade it had to be that day. Well we went to the shelter and I told them we were looking for a large, senior dog. We didn\’t care what breed, male or female. Just large and senior because no one wants to give big dogs or senior dogs a chance. We were told that there was only one in the whole shelter a black lab mix, but she was at an adoption event across town. Now this didn\’t click with the dog I\’d seen with Bear at the time, but my fiance quickly said that we\’d take her, sight unseen. Well we drove across town to get her but they\’d already left so back across town we drove. As we sat in the meet and greet area I saw Bear out of the corner of my eye and knew we were doing the right thing. When they brought Ladiebug into the area and I saw her for the first time I hit my knees, tears rolling down my cheeks as I recognized her as the dog I\’d seen with Bear for those 2 weeks. I wrapped my arms around her neck and buried my face in the soft fur of her neck. Then I showed the girls a picture of Bear, and they were amazed at how much they looked alike. She was about 9yrs old, had been a stray, had a little trouble seeing, her teeth were worn down and a couple were broken off. She was very calm, timid, they said afraid except for with us. She\’d been there for almost 3mo and no one had even looked at her, and she was beautiful, very thin, she only weighed 40lbs, had kennel cough, worms and an ear infection. We named her Ladiebug because that\’s what my grandmother called me as a child and we got her on my birthday, starting a new year, a new decade for me and a new life for her. we celebrated her birthday with mine. It was painfully obvious that she\’d been abused by someone pretty bad. You couldn\’t raise your hand or voice without her wincing, she wouldn\’t eat until we were out of the room, but he had to keep one of us within her sight at all times the rest of the time. She didn\’t make any noise for the first week, until on a walk and this weird guy walked too close to me and she moved between us and let out with a growl that had to have come from the tips of her toes. Then she was in the yard and saw him walking too close to her fence and she barked, then looked back at me as if to ask if it was ok, and I told her it was. She was a gentle, sweet soul who you couldn\’t help but love. Every morning when I\’d get myself a big bowl of cereal and sit down she\’ sit iin front of me and we\’d share the bowl, bite for bite. We used to share Kings Hawaiian rolls the same way, And I used to give her what I called slow gentle lovins, where I\’d rub and massage her entire body gently, slowly taking an hour or more and she\’d just fall over against me letting out a quiet \”urf\” as she did, and again here and there through out the session. We did this at least twice a day at first. More often after we found out she had mammary cancer, and it became more advanced. That\’s why we lost her. We found out she had it when we got her, and she was with us 2mo and 9 days shy of 2yrs. Not nearly long enough, but at least we knew that she knew she was loved during her last days. She was happy during her time with us. She used to lay on her side and rub her head ack and forth on it\’s side letting out an \”eeerrrruurrr\” for sometimes up to 5 mins at a time, her tail just wagging. It was 13 days after we lost her on 2-11-19 that I rescued Grunt-Grunt. My mom said that Ladiebug crossed over because she knew Grunt-Grunt was going to need a home. Somehow I believe that. God how I miss her!!! It took me 6mo to eat cereal again. I love you little girl!
