Do veterinarians counsel people on planning for their pets’ care if the owner dies? Do you work with estate planners to help make sure the pet goes to a loving home and that money is provided for their medical and nutritional needs?
As a veterinarian, I do help owners plan for the future and what the best situation may be for a particular pet in the case of a serious illness or death. There are also many nonprofit organizations that can help in these situations as well. For instance, here in Colorado Springs, we have Safe Place for Pets, which is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for pets with terminally ill owners.
I have not yet been asked by any owners to work with an estate planner but I would certainly be open to that if the need arose.
