Disasters can occur at any time in any place. Disasters such as floods, hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes and more don’t just affect people; they also affect pets and other animals. The only way to combat these unanticipated events is to plan ahead for your family and pets by having a disaster plan in place. Being prepared will help your entire family in the event of an emergency. If asked to evacuate, do so. Take your pets with you. Leaving your pets behind put them in grave danger of injury, straying, or being lost or stolen and even worse, can result in your pet’s death. Ask the first responder who orders you to evacuate if there is an evacuation center taking animals. If animals are not allowed inside your designated shelter, identify “pet friendly” hotels, find relatives or friends in a safe area who can take your animals, or check with your local shelter. Protect your pet by planning and having extra pet care supplies such as a leash, collar, food, water, bowls, garbage bags, litter, litter box and a carrier on hand. Having copies of your pet’s medical and vaccination records is helpful, and extra medications should be included. When there is any type of emergency or change in the normal routine, please remember that pets may react unpredictably. They can become stressed and care should be taken to ensure the animal won’t bolt if scared. Keeping them in a carrier will help them feel secure. Make sure your pets always wear identification. It is helpful to have a recent photo of your pet on hand. It increases the likelihood of finding your pet quickly if it becomes lost. Access the helpful Ready.gov Emergency Preparedness Handbook to start your Plan.
